Your Cholesterol Level The Third Report of the National Cholesterol Education Program has just been released and the following will bring you up to date on their guidelines. Cholesterol screenings generally include total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and HDL
cholesterol levels. All three of the readings are important, not just the total. Your recommended goals for cholesterol readings are:
Total Cholesterol (mg/dl)
Desirable: Below 200
Borderline: 200-239
Undesirable: 240 and above
LDL CHOLESTEROL (mg/dl)
Optimal: Below 100
Above Average: 100-129
Borderline: 130-159
High: 160-189
Very High: 190 and above
HDL CHOLESTEROL (mg/dl)
High: Above 60
Borderline: 40-60
Low: Below 40
